JUST THE BEAR FACTS by Paula Edwards, Deputy Clerk

Yesterday’s beautiful weather gave cause to wander for our amazing town bears. Local electrician, Joe Capani had the pleasure of seeing a Momma and her cub crossing in front of him on East Hamton Road ! Joe snapped a photo from his vehicle, and unfortunately the cub scooted and so only the momma is in the picture. Joe gave the OK to publish the shot, and with the warmer weather heading our way, it looks like the photos and reports of the T.O.B. bears will start flooding in! Here she is..the Capani-East Hamton Momma Bear! Thanks Joe! “Your” Bear is now noted and tagged on the map and bear wall in the Town Clerk’s office!

No sooner than I posted the May 2nd post, an email came in from Steven Gorgos on Upper Park Avenue.
The security camera at the Gorgos house captured some really nice photos of some nighttime visitors! (sadly, the video cannot be uploaded but I can assure you there are 4 bears on the video!)!
The Gorgos 4-Park Bears will now be displayed on the Town Clerk Wall, and here on “Just The Bear Facts”. Thank you Mr. Gorgos for your awesome submission!!!!

It’s just about a month since the last entry to ‘Just the Bear Facts’ posts, and while there have been a few sightings, I have a feeling that the abrupt surprise snowfall that graced the hills of the Town of Binghamton, may have caused some of the local bear population back in their cozy dens for a final rest. There seems to be, however, one heavily padded fellow (or young lady) that is has decided to make the Morgan Road area the new haunt, and is roaming from the yards of neighbor to neighbor, getting caught on security cameras over and over again. Thanks to those cameras, we have yet another photo of the Morgan Road Bear! He/She definately is going on the Bear Wall in the Clerk’s office! Keep those photos coming!!! We Love our Bears in the T.O.B!

‘Tis the season’…something we all hear, starting from mid October right through New Years Eve. ‘Tis the season, for ghouls, goblins, turkey, tinsel, presents, and magical lights…it’s also the season for the Town of Binghamton Ursus Americanus to crawl into dens to hibernate for the winter!
Well friends, Spring has sprung in the town, and our glorious, but somewhat annoying furbearing friends have finally awakened! I’ve had three or four reports so far of bears lumbering past security cameras, plus damage of reports to bird feeders and what I call “amazingly big” paw prints. A Norfolk Road resident had the pleasure of snapping pictures of a fairly good sized bear in one of their trees…(picture to follow). It also seems like Town employees have been blessed by the visitors so far, as Amy Ricci from the Assessor’s Office reported that a fine, fat chap has been spotted up in the Morgan Road Area. She sent me a photo of the footprints, and all I can say was OH MY GOSH! The print looked huge! Zach Soboleski, Assistant to the Code Enforcement Officer, showed us a video of a momma and two cubs sauntering across his porch. Due to some issues with uploading videos at this time, I can’t post Zach’s capture from his security camera…he also spotted one running from under his deck with a white trash bag in it’s teeth.
Well, after all…”Tis the Season!~” If you have photos of your bears, please send them to me at deputyclerk@townofbinghamton.com to get your picture uploaded to the webpage, and Town Clerk Bear Wall.
Happy Spring!
